As told by a friend with red hair:

I went to my brother’s graduation from Dartmouth in 1988, and Updike spoke at it. Afterwards, I followed him back to the dressing room area (with my dad) and asked the security guard to see if I could get my picture with him. The guard said probably not, but he would ask anyways. Now mind you, I was the ONLY person waiting for him. To my surprise, he came out a minute later, all smiles. I told him I really enjoyed his books, and it was an honor to meet him. We took a picture together, and he asked me if I was planning to attend Dartmouth, as my brother had. I said “No, I didn’t get into Dartmouth, so I’m going to Cornell.” He replied “That’s too bad, in a Dartmouth green sweatshirt, you’d look much like a Christmas tree.”
