The 10 or 12 of you who have been bullied into seeing Freedy Johnston with me know that the man has a charming way with an unlikely cover song: Take a Chance on Me, Rocket Man, Don’t Fear the Reaper, stuff like that. Unfortunately, at some point in time Freedy realized this and, instead of creating new music for the first time in seven (!) years, decided to record one of those dreaded covers-only projects.

(Parenthetically, has there even been an even sporadically listenable album of this sort? Bowie’s Pin-Ups never did much for me. The Shawn Colvin one was decent. Are there others?)

Anyway, the Freedy cover album sounds nothing like it should: It’s professional and tidy and doesn’t sound like anybody had any fun making it. So, for today’s FReedy FRiday offering, I refer you back to his sorta-long-ago cover of Glen Campbell’s Wichita Lineman, which whips the original and 99.99992% of all other cover versions out there. Buy it here.
