well, this sucks.

I interviewed Bobby in January for a story on the legacy of the “old” Yankee Stadium. Ordinarily, I end my serious journalisticismish calls with some half-sincere aside along the lines of “say, thanks for carving out a few minutes for me here.” With Bobby, I broke character and thanked him for the way he carried himself as a Yankee over the years, and told him how much everybody here was rooting for him to make a full recovery (I’m officially empowered to speak on behalf of New York City, don’t you know). He thanked me for the wishes in his deep Okie baritone, then laughed and said, “Now, don’t you worry about me.” He promised he’d see everybody at the Stadium in a few months; I’m glad he made it back, however briefly.
